Amnesty Act of 1872
The Amnesty Act of 1872 made it possible for former Confederates to vote again. This Amnesty Act immediately had its effects. By the year of 1876, Democrats had taken back their control of most states in the South (except three). Republicans were able to maintain their influence in the states of South Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida with help from federal troops.
